Top 10 Selling Cars in India 2017

The year 2017 started on a good note as all the vehicles in the top ten selling passenger cars list posted positive growth for the month of January, according to industry data. This is something which happened for the first time in many years.

Most of the cars registered double-digit growth barring Alto, Swift and Elite i20 whose sales increased by 7 percent, 3 percent, and 4 percent, respectively.

Also, Maruti Suzuki India’s mid-size sedan Ciaz entered the list after three months at a tenth position with growth of 20 percent. The car sold 6,530 units in January 2017 as against 5,431 units during the same month last year.

Launched in October 2014, Ciaz is the first car to offer SmartPlay touch-screen infotainment system. It is also the first car with smart hybrid technology (SHVS) in the country.

Ciaz’s competitor and Honda Cars India’s best selling model - City remained out of the list for the third consecutive month. After many months, no Honda model featured in the top ten selling cars list in India.

The company witnessed de-growth of 9 percent in overall domestic sales and stood at 15,592 units as against 17,135 units during January 2016.

Another significant development during January 2017 was, after nine months, Maruti Suzuki’s Celerio outsold Baleno by selling 403 units more than the latter.

Positioned at sixth and seventh spots, Celerio and Baleno’s sales increased 52 percent and 36 percent, respectively.

Talking about rest of the models, Alto retained its supremacy as the bestselling car in India with sales at 22,998 units. Dzire went one spot up to the second position with year-on-year growth of 29 percent and stood at 18,088 units.

WagonR also went up the ladder with 14,930 units sold in January 2017 as against 12,744 units during January 2016. Swift sales fall short of both Dzire and WagonR and came down to the fourth spot from previous second. It sold 14,545 units.
